Creating a vertex/line where vector data touches the surface

I was wondering if there was a way to determine where a vector feature meets the terrain surface in the main viewscreen, and if it does, to place a vertex or a line at those points. Currently the only way I can think of is to put the vector data (lines and polygons) into 3D mode and to guess at a correct position.
If not, is it possible to have the program determine this and place a vertex at the appropriate place(s) on the line, or create a line feature showing the places where the polygon intersects the surface?
Thanks so much, and if this is actually in the wrong forum, please move this thread to the correct place!
