G'day.

Working in mining I frequently have clients send me .str and .dtm files that they have generated in Surpac which is very common (and expensive!) mining software here in Australia (see https://www.3ds.com/products-services/geovia/products/surpac/ for details).

Given its cost I don't own Surpac but would very much like to be able to open such files in GM (V22.1). Can anyone open these files currently in GM or could these file formats please be added as part of a future version?

Cheers,
/al

P.S. I tried attaching sample .str and .dtm files to this post, but the interface wouldn't allow me to do for some reason??? I'm happy to email samples to anyone that private messages me...

One of the absolute best things about GM is it's Tinning algorithm (I think Delaunay 2D?), it happily handles millions of points and triangulates them in no time at all. The bottle-neck is getting the resulting TIN out into other programs; .DXF is all but useless and .DWG is only marginally better when handling large TINs.

Can I suggest HDF5 (.h5) format as a very useful output format, in particular (for us flood modellers) it would be fantastic to have it in the .h5 Scatterset format used by Aquaveo's Surfacewater Modelling System (SMS). Happy to send on over any sample.h5 files etc etc.

Many thanks, Andy

For trial and error of different pitch angles it's a pain to keep repeating.

A quick pitch degree only input and click would be good

Hi Blue Marblers,

Much as I love GM, so many of my frustrations relate to the Map Layout Editor! Grr! As a consulting engineer I need to present figures and drawings with my reports to support the analysis or design completed and I find it frustrating when I can't do this directly in GM due to bugs or minor annoyances! Its a complete waste of time to have to export to AutoCAD etc. when GM should be able to do it...

Today's frustration relates to the "Include All Workspace Layers in the Layout" in the MLE Element Properties checklist. When this was introduced to the MLE a few versions ago this was a huge step forward and meant that you could confidently save your figure template and not have to re-create it from scratch if for some reason GM "loses" your figures (yes, this still happens to me regularly!) or say you want to add it as a new/additional layout (New Layout/Add a new page...).

However, it seems in GM 26.1 when I select a template file previously saved with the "Include all workspaces..." tick box UNTICKED (as shown in upper screenshot below) to reuse it for another figure it opens up with the tick box TICKED and all layers selected (as shown in lower screen shot below). This basically means that we are back to where we were a few versions ago and have to manually select every layer that we previously displayed in a figure!

BTW - It also happens with the MLE legend which seems to forget the selected layers in the saved template and now displays all layers when the template is re-used (refer to third and fourth screenshots below).

I have deleted my earlier GM versions, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't happening in GM 25 but unfortunately I can't test it...

Could you guys please fix this so that once a MLE figure template is saved it "stores or remembers" the selected layers to display and the correct legend layers? It would also be awesome if a saved template could "remember" the map scale and the Map Centre Point (this has annoyed me since GM 16/17 - I use a workaround recently published on the forum where I create a layer with "centre points" for each figure to save a lot of swearing).

Okay rant over. I still love this software but I swear some days..🤯.

Cheers,

/al

Using GM v22.1 64 bit plus Lidar.

When defining a pipeline route GM is really good for the IP's and the Vertex Editor works very well. However defining curves for a long pipeline route is a pain. My present workflow puts it in a spreadsheet to compute the tangent points and chord length and bearings. I then use this data in the COGO arc function. EG. Editor output

Into Excel, below is the sheet I have been working on today. Note some columns are hidden.

Saving the curve data to the text file in the COGO input editor produces a file of format:

C 1730.363 R 2000.0 C N20.02019E R meters.

However, it only relates to the single curve and I manually put in the N/S & E/W bearing seed which is a pain. Could we use bearings instead? I use grid N in the vertex editor.

The main question: Is it possible to include the start TP coords of each chord in the saved file? e.g

E 463195.95 N 5737220.63 C 1730.363 R 2000.0 C N20.02019E R, from IP15 and then of course assemble all the curves in one file to read all the curves in one go, in this example over 30 curves. A route sample is below.

I dont have AutoCAD but have been looking at IntelliCAD as a work around, but GM is nearly there, it it just needs a bit of finishing.

Hopeful regards.

Greetings to the Global mapper team.

This software is the easiest GIS software i know of in the market and it is usually the first i recommend to my colleagues and clients.

I'm a Civil Engineer specializing in water resources. Please i would like to suggest/request the possibility of an hydrology module being included with Global Mapper, or perhaps a basic tool to automatically compute the longest flow path in a catchment and it's characteristics. We normally need this to design culverts, drains, etc and there is no automatic way to do this right now.

This suggestion will go a long way to marketing the software to my clients because i currently use other GIS software for this computation.

Kind Regards
'Seye Agunbiade

Perhaps one dialogue for fill all MBR and another for editing an MBR at the selected IP.

Hopeful regards

We use GM for our routing of pipelines & other infrastructure. For this it is customary to define the route as a list of turning points (TPs), intersection points (IPs) and the associated bend radius. At present, GM does not allow to input or extract this information directly (I can get TPs indirectly).

It would be a great addition to have this functionality. This can also include user provided limits on bend radius etc. when developing a route.

If there is a go-around within GM (at the moment we rely on other software), or a 'conversion' using existing capability, would be pleased to know more about it.

Thanks.

Hi Blue Marblers,

The MLE is getting better with each new version of GM and the ability to select and remember layers per Map Layer Editor is a huge step forward in improving its usefulness!

One suggestion that I'd like to make is could you please consider adding multiple Map View Elements to the MLE? That way you could produce a single figure with fixed background or topo etc. and then display, say four or more, different sets of different vector info in different "windows" on THE SAME FIGURE.

I do a lot of hydraulic modelling and import the results (vectors and rasters) into GM for display purposes and it would be great to be able to display multiple variables e.g. flow depth, velocity, water surface elevation, flood extents in four "windows" on the same figure rather than having to create a new figure for each variable. When you are modelling multiple scenarios e.g. existing and proposed conditions for 5, 10, 50, 100, 1,000 year events etc. the number of figures really starts to add up.

My current workaround in GM is to create images of what I want to display and then import them into a single figure in the MLE. Alternatively I import the images into multiple "Viewports" on a single drawing sheet in paper space in AutoCAD.

Anyhow, would be really helpful... Not sure if there are others out there who need this feature?

Cheers,

/al

P.S. On the same tack the ability to display a profile in the MLE would also be a huge step forward as its often necessary to display both "Plan and Profile" info on the same figure (again my current workaround is to take a screen grab of the profile and then import is as an image into the MLE).

G'day.

GM already has an extensive range of import/export formats, but I was wondering if there's any chance of adding Windows Metafile (WMF) to that list please for raster export?

I use an obscure piece of Australian hydrological software (RORB) that permits importation of drainage network only in WMF. I use GM for all my catchment/flow path delineation and its a pain having to export to another program just to create a WMF.

Cheers,

/al

Hi

I have a question. I have a DEM file with resolution 15 cm and I want to change it to 4 m resolution. Does Global Mapper software have the option to resample the resolution from 15 cm to 4 m resolution and create a DEM TIF file that I could be able to read the elevation data from it using the Global Mapper software?

In addition, I checked out some of the website and they introduced that I could use the software ArcMap and I should select in the “Arc toolbox” as following:

Data Management Tools – Raster – Raster Processing – Resampling

And from here I changed the resolution X and Y to 4m * 4m

When the file is created I select the “File” menu tab and select “Export map” and then save the file as TIF.

In this time, when I want to use again the Global Mapper software to read the elevation data as a DEM file, it seems the resampled file data is not completely saved as a DEM TIF data file and it seems it has some problem for opening the file and Global Mapper request "Image Ractifier" to choose 2 ground control points!

What should I do? Is there any easy way to resample my DEM TIF data to a new resolution DEM TIF data to read the new elevations?

Thanks for your response

Sincerely

Amir Farshadfar

G'day GM'ers,

Is there a way to disable/enable snapping while creating a vector? For instance sometimes its helpful to start and finish creation of a line by snapping to existing points but you don't necessarily want to snap while creating intermediate points.

I've looked but can't seem to find a way to do this as the snapping option has to be enabled/disabled prior to creating a new vector. It would be a helpful addition if you could please add it.

I note that Ortho command can be toggled on/off mid vector creation and that is helpful.

Cheers,

/al

On a recent project, I've had to use the "Reset to Last Export Bounds" several times to create drawings for our field technicians over the last month. Fortunately, I haven't printed from any other GM projects so the "Last Export Bounds" remain from this job. It would be nice to save those bounds as a layer so they could easily be reproduced.

I know I can simply copy the coordinates for a box but a quick right-click would be handier!

The current "slope terrain along line" function seems to take the starting elevation and continues it to the end selected line. It would be ideal, if the function took the start elevation and the end elevation of the selected path, and interpolated between those points

See the graphic below of the current results.

If I use the line brush to draw between the arrow tips, the function carries the start elevation to the end of the line... causing a vertical face in the DEM. It would be better to use the start and end elevations, and interpolate between them to create a smooth route.

I'm not sure if there is an other way for this but it would be nice and very-very useful to have the feature: "Evenly Spread Elevations Between First and Last to the Selected Elevations..", because I'd like to have the ability to change the elevations evenly only on the selected vertices.
