Hi, I'm using a Pixel 4a 5G phone running Android 11 and I'm having a problem losing GPS in Global Mapper Mobile. It occurs when I switch apps and then switch back to GMM and choose "GPS Centered". After that the textbox where the GPS info was reads "GPS: ???" and my position disappears from the map. Another thing that triggers the same issue is if I press and hold on the
map. The camera app opens and then when I return to GMM, it's lost GPS. I don't even have to choose "GPS Centered" to lose it in this case. The only way I've found to get it back after this happens is to force quit GMM and reload it. This is pretty much unworkable due to the number of times I need to switch apps and the difficulty of needing to zoom back in to the location after a reload.

I have a version of Global Mapper desktop that predates the mobile app so I'm currently evaluating a trial of the latest version and deciding whether to upgrade based on if the mobile app can work in the field for what I need. There are some other things I'd like to see added to Global Mapper Mobile so I didn't have to switch between different apps as much but I'll leave them for later messages as they are not as critical as fixing this problem.

Thanks

Brian

I have the auto track feature set to record my position every 30 seconds however when I transfer the GPS data to my desktop the time of the position recorded is not an included attribute. This is important as I need to correlate the time of the GPS position with measurements taken in the field. Is there anyway I can include the time of the GPS auto track position as an attribute when I transfer the data over? Any help is much appreciated.

I thought I would share my solution for getting AIS into Global Mapper. Firstly some research was needed to find examples of the sentences that GM was supposed to support. I could only find $PRAVE and $PCDLI ($GPWGT does not see to exist, and I didn't readily find information on $HID sentences). Waypoint NMEA $GPWPL would require more formatting that I was prepared to do.

Example $PRAVE Sentence:
$PRAVE,0001,0001,3308.9051,-11713.1164,195348,1,10,168,31,13.3,3,-83,0,0,,*66

Example $PCDLI Sentence:
$PCDLI,1016,20120406,184012.50,29.8043519295,-95.56066857583,0.9,312.5,-0.5,1.5,-1.2, 2,8,1.1,9,005.5,309.1,0133,20.5,13.2*7F<cr><lf>

So, I had a standard AIS 38400 baud serial connection into the workstation. I then download and configured AISDecoder (http://www.arundale.com/docs/ais/ais_decoder.html). This took some work, as the string needs to be 'tagged' and reformatted. In the end I had the format set as 'GIS filtered' and 'Tagged'. Within the 'Output Tags' I selected the following:

lon_1_2
lat_1_2
mmsi_0_2
vesselname_0_2
receivedtime_0_2
heading_1_2
speed_1_2
course_1_2

To use the tagged format, one has to create a 'Tag Template File'. This was a lot of trial and error, but eventually I worked out the nomenclature and created a formatted string to output, saved as PCDLI.xml, then loaded into AISDecoder:

$PCDLI,[mmsi_0_2],,,[lat_1_2],[lon_1_2],,[heading_1_2],,,,,,,,,[course_1_2],,,

As a test I output to file, and tested the output using the GM 'Read From File (NMEA Format Only)' option. I was very surprised to find that this worked (even though I had seemingly broken the format description by placing the MMSI number in the ID field, which documentation implied was only four characters long). Also worthy of note, is that GM seemingly ignores missing fields, so it is not strict compliance (thankfully!).

Following this, I installed NMEARouter (http://www.arundale.com/docs/ais/nmearouter.html) and created a virtual serial port (configure/VCP/create), then configured AISDecoder to output to UDP (127.0.0.1 port 39421) and in turn configured a UDP input connection within NMEARouter (configure/connection/new). The next bit was a little trial and error.

I had to create a new connection, using the virtual COM port. I could see lots of new ports, but the one that worked was labelled CNCA <-> COM5 (I already had a physical COM4 from a USB to serial adapter). This 'Connection' needs to be set to Input/Output. Then within NMEARouter you need to configure a route (configure/route/new) which is literally pointing the input to the desired output.

All that remains is to hit 'Start' on both AISDecoder & NMEARouter, then configure GM to pick up on the virtual COM port (before this I tested in PuTTy just to make sure I was getting data incoming on the virtual serial port). To my surprise it all worked!!

Hi
is it possible to add some custom information in the GPS Information windows ?. For instance, the accuracy "EPH" ( by the way , you mean HPE or Horizontal Position Error?) is not sufficient in my case.
I would like to show for instance, the deviation of Lat, Lon & Alt Error that we can catch from the $GPGST ( or $GNGST for GNSS) NMEA sentence.
Regards

We use drones for aerial survey of mine sites and measure volumes to track production volumes and stockpiles.

When I import point clouds from the same drone survey, at the same location, there is always a significant margin of error between the surveys, which can be reduced by use of Ground Control Points (GCPs).

I believe that a point cloud can be "offset" in that coordinate and elevation values can be scaled, adjusted.
1. How is this best accomplished?

Even though this above method will match the consecutive surveys up much better, still I expect that some margin of error exists that could be corrected by GCPs, effectively "rectifying" the point cloud the same way I rectify an image overlay by using 4 stationary, constant corner markers.
2. Can a point cloud be rectified rather than offset/scaled?

I am having no luck setting up my GPS unit with Global Mapper V17.1.1. I used the GPSComplete driver application to define COM4 serial input, 4800 baud. The unit speaks NMEA 0183 2.xx etc sentences. (I have only the foggiest idea of what all that means.)

But I do know that the GlobalSAt BU-353S4 GPS unit shows my position on BING maps, even as I drive. So it works using those serial settings.

In GM GPS Setup I selected the serial option, 4800 baud etc. I tried with the NMEA.. etc. option and also the Automatic Selection option. The unit is not recognized. I get error message: "Global Mapper was unable to detect a GPS device. etc..." When I click "Information" choice in the GPS Dialog box I get the message attached. The message is puzzling... Beside the GPS receiver not being registered, I am not trying to do anything with PDFE maps etc. Note how the "PDFE bit of the message is chopped off, by the way.

I also tried to use my elderly Garmin GPSmap-76CS, and selecting the Garmin inputs on GM's GPS SetUp. GM does not recognize the Garmin unit even when I have uninstalled the serial connection for the GlobalSat receiver unit. The Garmin unit works fine. by the way. (I am aiming at uploading maps to it using GM so would like this GPS SetUp problem to be solved for both the Direct GPS receiver and the Garmin unit..)

All hints gladly accepted

Ed

Hello,

I am a geologist and wanted to use global mapper to make a map.
I went to the field and took GPS points of places where I took strike and dip measurements of faults.
Basically, I have all GPS and corresponding strike and dip data, and I wanted to know if it's possible to import everything in global mapper instead of computing everything by hand (because there is quite a lot of data).
If the previous one is not possibe; I have been able to import the GPS points in Global mapper. So is it possible to convert a simple point to a strike and dip?

I have global mapper 16

Thank you very much
