near real time Lidar project and visualisation

Here an example of a project I am working on to produce near real time elevation mapping and produce changemaps on the fly. A changemap is the difference between to sets of elevation data of the same area. By subtracting the Gridded data in a standard way the changes in height become visible.

No change (about +/- 1 cm ) is made transparent: so when there are no changes you see a transparent map.

The maps are made based on lidar drone surveys very short time apart: 15 minutes. The aim is to find the operational settings of flying the drone, lidar settings, lidar data processing, gridding, and producing thee changemap: all on the fly within 15 minutes.

The maps are used in emergency situations (levee collapse) but this technique can be useful in any situation where changes have to be mapped.

GM is used as the primary GIS program and used for visualisations using the 3D mapping options.

Using GlobalMapper in Cycle Accident Mapping

I have using GM in association with OpenStreetMap vector data and UK government accident data to evaluate spatial distribution of cycle accidents in Glasgow, Scotland. The measure tool has been very useful to quantify road lengths. The heatmap tool has been invaluable in creating clear visual representations of the most intense accident locations and has helped me communicate my results.

For the last 8 years I've been using Global Mapper in the development of photo scenery for use in Flight Simulators. I've finally reached a point where I'm happy with the terrain models I have created.

Global Mapper has been the most amazing program and I'm so thankful for Mike and all his hard work over the years. For all the bug fixes, new features and outstanding support.

The image uses the Tif raster with the legend taking information from the RGB values and associated data.

What is the use of laser mapping?

I have heard about 3d laser mapping,You can easily map whole world within seconds. I want to know more about this technique. Does anybody explain it for me in detail?

3D terrain rendering and visualization: Global Mapper is amazing

Global Mapper is just getting better and better ... we are so amazed by its performance.

It can very efficiently open two of our large-sized global mosaics: one is the 30m-resolution, seamless, global imagery mosaic (size 124GB JPEG2000 file compressed from 2.3TB raw data) and the other is the 90m-resolution SRTM mosaic (size 112GB raw data). Then we zoom in any area of interest and make endless, realistic 3D simulations. Within a few minutes, a dozen of samples are produced. It is just so customizable, and we are very pleased with the 3D results.

I create my own topo maps before going on overland adventures. I use to do this with Mapsource but it wasn't long before the limitations of proprietary maps became a problem so I bought GM.

These are images at 3 zoom levels of my first truely completed map. Not to brag but I have to say I'm a little proud of my results.

Tahoe NAIP draped on LiDAR DEM

I'm amazed by how well Global Mapper works with immense data sets.

Here are some renders of 2010 NAIP imagery for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Both the LiDAR derived 0.5 meter DEM and the 1 meter NAIP (enhanced to 0.5 m) are full basin datasets.
