I want to create a DEM of a now submerged and buried Pleistocene surface. I have two data sets: 1. A Global Mapper DEM high resolution of the seafloor from MBES i.e. present bathymetry. 2. A contour data set from a Sub Bottom Profiler (SBP) reflector (0.5 m intervals from 0 to 6 m) showing the depth below the present seafloor of a defined "erosion" surface. i.e. the base of the overlying sediment. The contours therefore show the thickness (isopach) of the residual Pleistocene material and are effectively a mirror image of the underlying surface.

To reconstruct that palaeo-surface in actual space, I need to subtract the SBP thickness from the depth surface (bathymetry). I can do it for individual profiles (generated by GM Path Profile and processed in Adobe Illustrator) and attached below - but I want to be able to do so for the entire area of many square km that would require hundreds of such transects. The example shows greatly exaggerated profiles across the subject area: 1. seafloor (depth); 2. isopach (thickness of unit). Vertical and horizontal scales and exaggeration factor are the same in both profiles.

I don't feel like I should be struggling with this as much as I am but things seem really inconsistent. I have tried probably hundreds of combinations of settings with LiDAR data I collected with a DJI L3 and cannot come up with settings that work, even after combing through as much documentation and watching as many Blue Marble YouTube videos I can. When I do find something that works (temporarily) I take a screenshot of the settings. Then I go back and try it with the same exact settings on a different day and get completely different results, none of which will classify buildings. I haven't even gotten to the vegetation yet because the ground and buildings settings adjustments are so inconsistent. I've tried running various settings on a full resolution point cloud of over 2,000 points per square meter and also on thinned pointclouds of around 100 points per square meter. Is GM just not able to handle dense point clouds? It seems like, from what I'm reading, the automatic calculations are more tuned for low density LiDAR data from fixed wing aircraft, like 10 points per square meter or something like that. What if I want to find very small or obscured objects, like cultural stone monument artifacts in a dense jungle with thick canopy cover? I need denser data to do this. GM also hangs a lot when running classifications on the denser point clouds. I have tried with both .laz and .copz.laz files. Anyone else out there trying to process pointcloud data collected with a DJI L3? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Does anyone know the correct procedure for reclassifying values for a GMG?

I’m working with a change-detection raster created by subtracting two DEMs. My goal is to calculate cut-and-fill volumes along line segments to analyze erosion and deposition. I’m using the volume calculation tool with a 10 m corridor around the line and a sample spacing of 0.30 m × 0.30 m in the X and Y directions. All vertices have a base height of 0 m.

The issue is that the raster has a lot of noise within the –0.30 m to +0.30 m range. I assumed these values would be excluded because I applied a custom shader that hides values within that range, but the shader settings don’t seem to affect the volume calculation—the tool still uses the full range of values. The volume tool allows setting X and Y sample spacing, but not Z.

What is the proper way to reclassify or filter out small elevation changes before running the volume calculation? Raster reclassification?

My goal is to calculate volumes at a sample spacing of 0.30m in the x, y, and z axis .

Thanks GM forum.

I am importing some simple standard DXF 3D models to replicate within GM without having to create a large number of them individually in CAD. E.g. via simple GM copy-paste, move, rotate and vertical offset however there does not appear to be a way to adjust the Z values for new locations.

In the X-Y plane, the functions such as Copy/Paste to new layer, Move Mesh Feature and Rotate about the selected vertex all work fine.

However, none of the vertical re-positioning options have any effect. Entering an Offset to Z/Elevation doesn't complain but doesn't stick. Creating a new attribute with the desired new elevation and configuring in either the Feature itself or the Layer to get the new Elevation heights from that attribute for either Absolute or Model Height doesn't change anything.

Whatever is tried the vertices Z values remain permanently fixed at the original value, and the models only ever position at either the original elevation sitting under or over the terrain at the new locations or uses that value as an offset to the ground level so sits way above the terrain at the new location.

Am I missing something in the tools, or is this a bug, or is locking the mesh Z value actually a feature?

At the moment I'm travelling and limited to V25.1.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Dear Global mappers,

i'd like to add a grid (30m x 30m) to a siteplan but not in terms of lines, but with just the height values (one of them highlighted in the screenshot). The base data is available as raster (DTM) and also vector (pointcloud) data. The height value displayed should match the position (every 30m).

What would be the most elegant and straight forward approach in your eyes?

Thanks in advance.

Alex

Hi Global Mapper users,

thanks for accepting me in the forum.

I am using Global Mapper for a while and most of the time, I have found the answers to my questions on the forum or elsewhere. My actual GM version is 21.1.0.

But this time, I have a particular question for a particular situation: I have a DEM representing a coastal area. In this coastal area there is a former wetland which has been dried for farming. The particularity of this place is that it's under sea level. So, I would like it to stay dry as well as I want the sea to keep its water. My question is: how can I represent my map with water in the sea at the normal level and no water in my dry land, which is under sea level ? I know that it is eventually possible to define a polygon and apply a different positive water in it for moutainous lake for example, but this option does not allow the user to define a negative water level.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

J.

I’ve successfully converted my elevation data to a slope map using the shader, so I now have a raster layer showing slope values.

However, I’m stuck on the next step:

How can I create a profile path or extract the slope values along a line (e.g., a transect or road)?

My goal is to either generate a profile showing slope values along the line, or at least extract the slope values that intersect with the line for further analysis.

Any guidance or step-by-step help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have always have the following problem to some point, without finding why GM reacts this way.

I have a DTM loaded, as well as the orthorectified image. In the example below, image resolution is 25 cm/pixel (on the left), and the resolution3D view is not only degraded, the pixels are seriously deformed (even though the scale is 1x1). Vector files are not properly scaled either; the big orange dot on the right is a tiny orange dot symbol of size 2 which you can see in the middle of the orthorectified image.

I have tried many options in the 3D configuration menu, changing window size etc. and this does not change anything, the 3D view is just hopeless. There is no other raster layer loaded. I have far enough RAM (64 Gb). GM version is 26.0 but this has been a problem to me since the beginning of times. What could the reason be?

I thought that it might be related to file size. The DTM and the orthorectified image are 1.2 Gb each, and 10,000x30,000 pixels. However, if file size is the limitation, would it explain that the resolution of the 3D view is that bad?

Thanks for your help!

daniel
