This beta version includes many new and improved capabilities, most of which were added based on customer suggestions. We encourage you to check out the latest features added to beta: 

• Tree trunk classification and extraction in the Automatic Point Cloud Analysis Tool - trunks are identified in a point cloud by diameter at breast height (DBH) and length, assigned to the new Tree Trunk classification (code 74), and can be extracted as features with optional cylinder mesh models.
• Real-time preview window for Automatic Point Cloud Analysis - The window renders a classified point cloud subset and updates as the user adjusts and fine-tunes parameters, all without requiring a full analysis run.
• Multi-Spectral Imagery Support in Pixels to Points - P2P now supports the processing of imagery with more than 3 bands of data. Point clouds with up to 4 bands can now be created, and OrthoImagery with any number of bands. The multi-spectral images should be provided as 1 band per image.
• Further Pixels to Points optimization has improved processing time and output quality, especially in mesh completeness and edges.  
• Batch Convert/Reproject tool has been updated with full coordinate transformation support and a new, user-friendly interface. Find this tool in the File dropdown menu.
• Coordinate Converter tool has been expanded to support full 3D coordinate transformations. Find this tool in the Tools dropdown menu.
• Improved Geopackage support to maintain fidelity both in and out of Global Mapper. 
• Support for ESRI MapServer raster and ImageServer streaming sources in the Online Data tool

It has been about three months since I looked at lidar data in 3D View on my laptop and something is not right today. Please see the inserted screen grabs.

3D View is corrupted with what appears to be tiles in the wrong places and some sort of strut structures in places.

I have a Dell 7680 Precision laptop with NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada GPU.

I did update drivers this weekend installing Intel gfx_win_101.6734 from Dell's driver download site and NVIDIA driver 572.83 Production Branch from NVIDIA's site.

Anyone have thoughts I should do?

I am heading to Intel's site now and check for an update UHD driver.

Version 25 of Global Mapper Pro includes a new Point Cloud Custom Classification Training tool, existing tools redesign, and Pixels to Points processing speed improvements.

The Automatic Point Cloud Analysis tool is the new hub of point cloud classification and extraction in Global Mapper Pro. This integrated tool allows users to manage automatic classifications, segmentation, and feature extraction from one window, providing the ability to share settings and run multiple processes simultaneously. Also included are new segmentation processes for ground and noise classifications, such as the segmentation-based “Max Likelihood” methods, which were previously only available for non-ground points, but are better tailored for modern point cloud generation and collection approaches.

A new Custom Feature Classification Training tool (Beta) lets users define additional custom classifications based on unique attributes and spatial patterns. Users can create their automatic point cloud classifications and train Global Mapper to find specific objects in their point clouds. These settings can also be applied to further train existing classification methods to tailor the tool for particular datasets and workflows. 

Other updates to version 25 of Global Mapper include the ability to compare kriging outputs to control data as cross-validation and improvements to the creation of estimated tree footprints extracted from point clouds. A few of the new tools are expansions of existing popular ones, such as Raster Painting, which allows for editing image and raster layers, and Elevation QC for applying vertical adjustments based on ground control points.

A newly added Least Cost Path tool provides a terrain analysis method for finding the shortest and most efficient path between locations. By iterating through all possible options, it identifies the best route between specified point features across a terrain layer based on minimized terrain slope angle and avoiding unwanted areas. This simple yet powerful analysis can connect two locations, map multiple locations into a single path, or discover the most accessible site. 

Blue Marble’s Global Mapper 25.0 Beta build has been updated with changes based on user feedback. The Beta License has been extended until September 26th.

• Location: Select desired layers, right-click on them, and select the Layers submenu, select Create Multi Band Layer From Single Band Layers

Histogram Matching and Histogram Updates

• The new Histogram Matching option is available on the Color / Contrast Adjustment tab of the Options dialog for a layer. The Options Dialog is accessible by right-clicking a layer
• Histogram matching can only be performed on layers with the same band data type (i.e. unsigned 16-bit, unsigned 8-bit, etc.)
• Automatic Histogram Equalization: is on the Color / Contrast Adjustment tab of the Raster Options dialog
• The Equalize Histogram contrast adjustment mode and Histogram Matching cannot be used on the same layer at the same time
• The Histogram tab of the Metadata dialog now generates histograms faster through Multi-Threading

Variograms and Kriging

• These new features are located on the Analysis Menu Dropdown

Map Layout Updates

• Arrow Call Out Shapes have been added to the Map Layout
• With elements selected, the Right Click will no longer select unselected elements

New RTK and NTRIP Client Support

• Use the new built-in NTRIP Client to connect directly to your correction source for RTK enabled units. Specify your source connection parameters in the RTK section of the GPS Setup window to connect. Once connected, corrections will be sent to your device via RTCM. The device will then send the corrected location information back via NMEA. This can be done either wired or via Bluetooth, depending on your device. If you're using a Bluetooth device you may need to confirm it's COM port in Windows Bluetooth settings

Automatic Breakline Extraction From Terrain

• This tool Can be found in the Analysis menu>Generate Breaklines (from Terrain Grid)

• This tool would benefit from testing against a variety of terrain data. Customers are encouraged to contact the Beta Team with any data that presents a challenge for this tool

New 3D labels 

• Labels created on a Label Layer in Global Mapper can now be viewed in 3D. To convert labels to a Label Layer simply Right Click your data layer and select Layer>Create Label Layer

• To Turn on the 3D label functionality, go to Configuration>3D View Properties>Data Display and check the box for Show 3D Labels

Undo

• Use Control Z to undo multiple levels of progress across a multitude of tools in Global Mapper

• Use the Manage Undo/Redo menu found in the Edit dropdown to see your list of recent operations and adjust your Undo settings

• TIN Simplification: A new right-click option for Generated TIN layers. Right-click on theTIN layer and that option will be in the Layer sub-menu. It's as simple as that!

• Eye Dome Shading for Lidar in the 3D viewer: Located in the Configuration menu under 3D View > Environment

• Sweep Selection in the 3D View: With the 3D Digitizer active you can use the new sweep selection. While the Digitizer is active use Ctrl and Alt to add and subtract from your selection, and hold Shift to navigate.

• Post Processing Report for Pixels to Points tool: A report generated when a Pixels to Point job is complete. Knowledge is power!

• Improved Lidar Auto Classification of Buildings: This is a new and experimental update. Please send us test data if possible as we need as much information as possible. 

• The old Auto Building Classification is still accessible through the Favorites Menus

Larry Mayer will speak about advances in sonar and visualization technologies that uncover seafloor discoveries such as 3,000-meter high mountains in the Arctic, D-Day wrecks, the behavior of whales, and climate history.

It’s that time of year when thoughts turn to the end of the year, the holidays in most parts of the world, and hopefully a new beginning where we all work together for a better tomorrow for all of us.  Here at Blue Marble Geographics we are gearing up for our fiscal year end and planning for 2016.  We have much to be thankful for; we have a great customer base, we have great software tools that solve interesting challenges and we feel really lucky to be in the GIS business at a really compelling time.  Whenever I have the opportunity to talk about our software or our company I always take a moment to point out the important changes we have seen in GIS over the past decade.  The combination of such innovations as the release and relevance of Google EarthTM across industries, the prevalence of GPS in our everyday phone devices and the development of LiDAR have all conspired to both complement what we do and present great challenges to GIS software vendors like Blue Marble.  I love Google EarthTM for simply being the calling card for explaining what it is we do in GIS to any novice.  I love the utility of a decent GPS in my iPhone.  And most importantly of all, I love the challenge and opportunity that stepping up to the LiDAR data challenge has presented for Blue Marble.  As a software developer we really have to innovate to deliver tools that both accurately represent this data in 3D while giving the user the tools to render and process all of that data, the way they want to, with the immediacy they need.  The Geographic Calculator and Global Mapper have continued to deliver in this arena in ways that traditional GIS tools, still as of this writing, cannot.   But I digress…….

I wanted to take a moment with this blog post to update our customers on our pricing strategy for Global Mapper.  Pricing for Global Mapper for us has been both an opportunity and a challenge. It has been an opportunity because we are committed to keeping the software affordable and we believe the GIS software market needs an affordable option.   We also do not require users to upgrade.  Yet we proactively support and develop the product with multiple releases throughout the year.  It is challenging because we are under great pressure to raise the price to offset those costs.   It was four years ago November 3rd that we acquired Global Mapper.  We have not only resisted the temptation to raise the price but we have embraced it.   I feel that we have done a decent job of honoring the pricing model while advancing the technology and the accessibility of the original software product. 

Over that time we have introduced new licensing options for Global Mapper and they too provide good value.  Traditionally Global Mapper was only available as a single user license.  The base price of the product had only ever been raised $50 every other year.  That is something that was established prior to Blue Marble ownership but we have carried it forward and today the single user price is still less than $500. Sometimes customers investigate our Network or Dongle pricing options and jump to the conclusion that we have raised the price of the software.   However, our pricing for network licenses are simply a factor of two per seat off the base price, in fact less than two.  So for a two seat network license Global Mapper is actually a great discount off of multiple single user seats.  However, that two seat license can serve many more users than two seats, which of course is another great deal. 

Admittedly we have changed some of the licensing process and that was something we had to do in order to try and stem the tide of piracy.    It is a very difficult thing to stop and really feels like a losing battle but we are doing our best with that with minimal impact on our loyal customers.  Some companies combat piracy with subscription or cloud licensing.  We have resisted that temptation because we feel that at this point, time out licenses are not in the spirit of Global Mapper.    After a user purchases a seat of Global Mapper, they are under no obligation to ever upgrade.  It is our challenge to add the features and functionality that make them WANT to upgrade.   So this is how we feel we have added licensing options to Global Mapper while keeping the pricing affordable and the software accessible.  Yet piracy of our software continues stealing value from paying customers.  It’s a shame.  If you ever run into anyone using a pirated copy of Global Mapper let them know they are breaking the law and they are hurting the accessibility of the software for everyone else.

Another change we did introduce over the past couple of years is to offer Enterprise License Agreements.  These ELA’s are intended to give our customers that have large numbers of seats of the software the option to lock in a contracted price, they provide volume discounts and include additional packages of interest to them such as training, the Global Mapper Lidar Module, and the Global Mapper SDK.  Admittedly we have struggled a bit with this pricing but we have recently confirmed our pricing model for ELA’s and it will scale directly with our base list pricing. Our ELA pricing will be as transparent as our single user pricing.   We are also now offering Maintenance options for companies that need to budget to maintenance instead of upgrading to new versions. If you have had a past interest in an ELA and were not happy with your quote I encourage you to reach out to your sales representative and learn about these new contract models.  

We are also committed to our International resellers and partners and our system integrators everywhere.  These companies are helping us reach local international markets by providing ‘boots on the ground’ for customer support and services to complement our software offering.  We have introduced a Certified Global Mapper Training program and our resellers are now being certified to provide quality training, certified by Blue Marble, to you in your own country. 

We may introduce other slight changes or tweaks to pricing in the future but in the end we are committed to keeping the software affordable.  We will be retiring the option to upgrade a single user license for $199, but that is only being raised to $299 for consistency across product pricing.  If you have a special deal or large group of single user licenses there may be some restrictions to that offer.  Please send us an email to verify that you are eligible. 

Lastly, the spirit of Global Mapper, and the Geographic Calculator, is in our customer support and our customer feedback development approach.   We are 100% committed to being available to our customers and to providing the best possible support we can.  We have never swayed from that and if your experience has been less then positive please reach out to me personally.  Our approach to development is directly tied to customer requests.  We do introduce our own ideas, but the vast majority of what we add to our software comes from customer feedback.  We look forward to the New Year and we are committed to driving Global Mapper, the Global Mapper Lidar Module, the Global Mapper SDK, the Geographic Calculator, and the GeoCalc SDK to be the best they can be while still being affordable at the same time.
