    Question Generate 3D features - elevation from attributes w/ keywords?

    How does GM associate an elevation with a vertex?
    The manual states:
    ===============
    If selected, the Generate 3D Features Using Loaded Elevation Data option specifies that 3D objects should be created in the shapefile. The elevation stored for each vertex/point will be the first of the following which is available:

    * The elevation associated with the vertex/point in question.
    * The elevation associated with the entire feature being exported. For example, the elevation of a contour line.
    * The first elevation obtained by searching the loaded elevation grid layers at the position of the vertex/point.
    * A value of 0.0 will be used if no elevation could be obtained via any of the prior methods.
    ================

    I have point features with three attributes: z_pos, height and width. For some reason, GM selects my "height" attribute as the one to pick for the elevation, although it's z_pos that I wish to use. "height" is not even the first attribute in the table, which leads me to think that GM is looking for KEYWORDS in the attribute names. Naming my attributes to a,b and C strengthened this hypothesis, because after saving, the ELEVATION was 0.

    So, are there any recommended attribute names that I shall use in order to get GM to pick the correct attribute for my features?

    All the best,
    Simon

    Simon,

    By default, Global Mapper will look through the attribute list for some recognized attribute names to use for an elevation. HEIGHT is one of those recognized attribute names. You can manually select which attribute to use for elevations though by selecting a layer in the Control Center, pressing Options, then selecting your Z_POS attribute as the elevation attribute.

    Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike
