    Default Projections for Poland

    Hi

    is there any way to define user Projections and have them available in combo bar in Tools->Configuration->Projection
    instead loading them from PRJ files ?

    I would like to create all projections for Poland and have them kind of organized, better than this few already in.

    Any advise more than welcome.
    Later on when I finish I can share it.

    Regards
    Piotr

    Piotr,

    There is not currently any way to add user-defined projections as selections on the projection dialog. Currently saving PRJ files is the best way to maintain something like this.

    Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    thanks for so prompt reply.
    Is this option considered to be in the next releases ?

    PRJ files are good but do you think that kind of XML structure for Datum and Projection definition would not be better ?

    Example from Manifold
    <xml>

    <datum>
    <name>Poland G-1.10</name>
    <majorAxis>6.378245000000000000000000e+006</majorAxis>
    <eccentricity>8.181333401693115200000000e-002</eccentricity>
    <centerX>3.342970000000000000000000e+001</centerX>
    <centerY>-1.46574600000000000000000e+002</centerY>
    <centerZ>-7.6286500000000000000000e+001</centerZ>
    <rotationX>9.9630555556e-05</rotationX>
    <rotationY>1.4675000000e-05</rotationY>
    <rotationZ>-2.3431666667e-04</rotationZ>
    <scaleAdjustment>-8.40772800000000000000000e-007</scaleAdjustment>
    </datum>

    <preset>
    <name>PUWG '1965' - Zone 1</name>
    <category>National Grids*Poland</category>
    <datum>Poland G-1.10</datum>
    <system>Double Stereographic</system>
    <unit>Meter</unit>
    <scaleX>9.99800000000000000000000e-001</scaleX>

    <scaleY>9.99800000000000000000000e-001</scaleY>
    <localScaleY>1.000000000000000000000000e+000</localScaleY>

    Piotr,

    This is something that we might add in a future release. The PRJ files now use the standard WKT format for projection definitions. It is not XML-based, but it is similar and widely used. It doesn't seem like it would make sense to introduce a new PRJ format just for the sake of using XML since no one else would support it.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    My only point is to have option to organize projections in my case for Poland.

    At the end it doesn't matter what format is used as long it is easy and consistent to use.

    Right now Global Mapper has different way to define custom datum and custom projection.

    Moving custom definition requires copying PRJ file plus entry in custom datum definition file.

    Another one thing is that selecting Projection doesn't not automatically picks up right datum at least for Polish Projection PUWG 1965 (in GM called System 1965 (Uklad 1965) [Poland] )
    There are 5 zones but 4 of them using one datum and fifth is using another datum.

    For logical completeness it would be good if after selecting Projection correct datum is picked up.

    It does for custom projection when is defined.

    Piotr

    Piotr,

    Ah I see what you mean about defining custom projections in the XML file. Once Global Mapper has support for defining named custom projections then there will be some format used to store these in Global Mapper. As there currently isn't any method of defining custom named projections (PRJ files have a slightly different purpose), then there isn't a place to save them.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    could you please estimate when these changes would be implemented in GM ?

    Piotr,

    The next scheduled release of Global Mapper isn't until August, when v12.00 would come out. I'll add this to the todo list, but don't have an estimate yet. We have a pretty massive todo list.

    Thanks,

    Mike
