Using GM, I took the NASA Blue Marble image and merged it with elevation data from several different sources, creating a 90 meter, 52 gigabyte global terrain map. The map has been split into 648 1×1 degree GeoTIFF tiles to make it easier to download a specific region of interest. Makes a great base map. http://www.gelib.com/global-terrain-map.htm
