Everyone uses Google Earth for 3D terrain simulations, but I often find inconvenient when I want to superimpose many other GIS layers (vector or raster) in formats other than KML/KMZ. Many of our GIS data are in traditional GIS formats such as SHP, TAB, GeoTIFF. Global Mapper 3D functions and tools come to rescue ... it is super fast and flexible, easily displaying a multitude of layers in 3D.
We also find Global Mapper can display extreme large-sized files very efficiently - for example, loading one of our global imagery mosaics at 30m-resolution (124GB JPEG2000 file compressed from 2.3TB raw data, on external HD) only takes about 8 seconds. Once the file is loaded, refreshing for Full View is also very fast, something like two seconds, much faster than we expected initially. We work with Global Mapper 64-bit on Win7 PC.
From my experience no other GIS software can surpass the efficiency of Global Mapper 3D simulation. We routinely make numerous such renderings ... never get bored!!!
