Users are constantly requesting and receiving new features sometimes on a daily basis. There is truly no software support like the one found with Global Mapper.

Occasionally, the request is sometime that will require a more concerted effort from Mike and the Global Mapper team. When that happens, a user is told that the request is valid and that features has been added to the “To Do” list. Haven’t you always wondered what current “To Do” list is?

Well, Mike was gracious enough to share with me the “To Do” list and agreed that I could share it with the community. So here it is the famous Global Mapper To Do List:

WFS Import

Direct DB Connectivity – PostGIS, Oracle, etc.

Built-in Online Land Cover and Roughness Grid Sources (i.e. CORINE)

New Import Formats – LASzip, GeoJSON, LandXML, LogASCII, Petrel

New Export Formats – LASzip, Adobe Illustrator (.ai), Garmin JNX, ASRP, CADRG, NetCDF, SOSI

Analysis Features – HAAT Analysis, More Hydrological/Flood Analysis

More Advanced Attribute Query/Combine Operations

What do you think? From these features what you like to see most? Are there features listed that would be more helpful that other?

Let us know in the comments below.

Since the new release has been announced, I’ve received many questions asking what is the cheapest method to go straight from Global Mapper version 11 to version 13. Although, there is no direct upgrade method, by taking advantage of the discounts available here at Global Mapper Forum, you can purchase 2 upgrade licenses and save significantly. Let me show you how:

From looking at the table above, we can see clearly how using the discounts available here at the forum can be used to help pass on savings to you. You could use that money, and buy a new mobile phone!

Two new features were added today (April 30, 2011) to Global Mapper 12.02. Advanced Feature Creation sub-menu of the Digitizer Tool allowing you to create a new line feature by finding a path connecting the selected point features and a new item to the 3D path profile details for the maximum slope and the location along the path where that maximum slope is encountered.

Here is a tutorial showing how both of these new features work:

For Global Mapper 12 users this is a free update and you can download the newest versions here:

As a map maker and web developer, I’m always looking for a new way to show off the maps that I’ve created with Global Mapper. That’s why I was pretty excited when I stumbled on this 3D Flash Map available from ActiveDen.

The nice thing about this Flash based map is that it’s really easy to update the map and place pins. No Flash developer experience necessary. All you have to do is update a simple XML file (I use Notepad++). There is one XML that you can edit for the states and another one you can edit for the placement of the pins. You place the pins by defining the X & Y coordinates on the map. To help you find those X`s and Y`s you can hit “Shift+A” when the map launches and a helpful coordinate finder will appear. You can link your pins to movies, images and text (which can also link to other sites). Check out the demo

The other nice thing about this map? It’s cheap! For only $10 you can get your own 3D Flash Map and make your own cartographer’s portfolio with all those great maps you’ve created using Global Mapper. The download is available at ActiveDen

This is an unusual blog post for me, but this past Christmas my mother-in-law bought me a really neat wallet and the minute I looked at it I thought, “Wow, the readers at Global Mapper Forum would love this wallet. So here it is: the “Dynomighty Design Men’s Explorer Mighty Wallet“

It’s a pretty neat wallet! It’s made from Tyvek® which is the same stuff USPS express mail envelopes are made of. The thing that I like about this wallet is that it expands and contracts. I think of it as a very lightweight wallet but stuff some receipts and cash in it and suddenly it is a very thick wallet. George Castanza would love this wallet! It will take whatever you give it and more. Amazon has it for sale here.

So enough of the boring info, what about the map! I downloaded the Bering Glacier topo from usgs.gov and loaded it into Global Mapper. (just dragged the zip file into the program window). If you want to download the topo yourself go to USGS, and do a search for search for “Cape Yakataga, AK” using the Map Locator Tool. By opening the control center and clicking “Metadata” I was able to get some technical details about the map:

So anyhow, just thought this might make a good present for yourself or another map lover in your family. Oh, and I forgot to mention that 5% of the proceeds from the sale of this wallet benefit the Alaska Conservation Foundation – a public foundation protecting Alaska’s wildlife and lands for over 30 years. So not only does it show off your cartographic geekiness, it’s also good for the planet! Enjoy!

Just announced this morning in the forum, Global Mapper Software LLC announced the availability of our next release, Global Mapper v12.01, at:

http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper_setup_v1201.exe

Just download that file and run it to install v12.01. If you need the 64-bit version you can download and install that from:

http://www.globalmapper.com/global_mapper_setup_v1201_64bit.exe

Numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper for this release. The most significant changes are described below:

Added built-in access to 1/3rd arc second (~10m resolution) US NED terrain data using the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command.

Added option to export tiles conforming to the OSM (OpenStreetMaps) and TMS (Tile Map Service) standards for tile naming and zoom levels.

Added support for adding new custom OSM/TMS online tile sources on the File->Download Online Imagery/Data dialog.

Added support for exporting loaded data to BSB Marine Chart format files.

Added ability to improve display of 3D view by selecting the size of the terrain and texture layers to use when displaying the 3D view and also interpolating view of data draped from main map view. You can increase the terrain and texture sizes to get a more detailed (but slower) display.

Added option to create area features from equal colors/elevations in any loaded raster/elevation layer by right-clicking on it in the Control Center and selecting the new option to do so. This is useful for things like extracting vector coverages from something like a land use/cover raster image, like NLCD data.

Updated watershed analysis to allow finding the drainage areas that drain to a selected point as well as to trace the flow leaving selected points.

Added support for using overview layers from Erdas Imagine .img files when rendering, greatly speeding rendering of very large .img files with overview layers.

All of the other numerous changes are listed in the What’s New document that is displayed during installation.

Global Mapper v12.01 is a free upgrade for any existing registered v12 users. Pricing for new Global Mapper v12 licenses is $349 $295.65 US for a new single license, $299 $254.15 US per license for 2-19 licenses, and $249 $211.65 US per license for 20 or more licenses. Users with licenses for Global Mapper v11.xx can purchase an upgrade to v12.01 for only $129 $116.10 US per license. Site license pricing is also available on request. As always, upgrades and new licenses can be purchased from the Purchase page at:

Global Mapper Software LLC is excited to announce the availability of Global Mapper v12.00.

To download, please visit:

http://www.globalmapperforum.com/trial12

Just download that file and run it to install v12.00. It will install alongside any existing Global Mapper version, so you don’t have to worry about losing what you’re currently working on to evaluate it.

Numerous significant enhancements and bug fixes have been made to Global Mapper for this release. The most significant changes are described below:

Added built-in access to the NAIP color high-resolution imagery for the entire United States via the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command.

Added built-in access to the ASTER GDEM terrain data at 1.5 arc second (~45m) resolution for the entire world via the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command.

Added built-in access to premium Parcel data for the entire US via the File->Download Online Imagery/Data menu command.

Added support for automatically delineating stream networks and watershed areas using loaded terrain/DEM data using the File->Generate Watershed menu command.

Added ‘Point Styles’ tab to Options dialog for vector layers with point features allowing users to setup the styling of points in a layer. Now users can use the default type-based styling, apply a single style to all point features in a layer, setup an attribute-based styling system that styles the points based on the value of an attribute value or the display label, or randomly assign colors to the dot or custom symbols for points in a layer.

Updated the Download Online Imagery/Data interface to group data sources to allow easily finding data sources of a particular type or covering a particular area.

Updated the Control Center to support assigning groups to selected layers via the right-click menu. Those groups can then be collapsed in the Control Center to allow easily selecting, closing, or hiding/showing that group.

Added new right-click option to the Digitizer Tool for creating a regular grid of areas anchored at some point and of user-specified size, rotation angle, and naming.

Added ability to export BIL/BIP/BSQ and JPEG2000 raster files with multiple bands of data at 8, 16, or 32-bit depth (similar to what was possible before for GeoTIFF exports).

Added option to use halo fonts for text display. Halo fonts display a thin border around text of a slightly different color, making the text visible on any background.

Updated the export interface to replace the long sub-menus with dialogs allowing format selection to prevent overflowing the export format lists off of the screen.

Updated the map legend display based on vector types to allow labeling each style in the legend by the feature type, name, or any attribute value, in addition to the feature description which is what was always used before.

Added new EDIT_VECTOR script command (replacing the ASSIGN_TYPES command) to allow adding/updating feature attributes values and display labels, reclassifying features, rotating/scaling/offsetting feature coordinates, or marking features as deleted by searching loaded features for matches against their attributes/label values and/or types.

Added support for loading HCRF marine chart files, including the ARCS chart series from the UKHO.

All of the other numerous changes are listed in the What’s New document that is displayed during installation.

Pricing for Global Mapper v12.00 is $295.65 US for a new single license, $254.15 US per license for 2-19 licenses, and $211. 65 US per license for 20 or more licenses. Users with licenses for Global Mapper v11.xx can purchase an upgrade to v12.00 for only $116.10 US per license. Site license pricing is also available on request.
