Thanks for your great software and dynamic forum. I'd be interested into sunshine maps calculation from a DEM. It'd be usefull to propose such a functionnality into Global Mapper. Those maps allow to retrieve the solar energy theoriticaly received by a the ground surface depending on earth location and then allow to calculate solar equipments, urban planning, vegetables production and so on.:)

Do you have any further information on this calculation? Sounds like it might be similar to the 'Slope Direction' shader that is currently in Global Mapper that allows you to see in what direction the terrain is facing at any given location.

    Thanks,

Thanks to your response. Using slope maps to calculate the sun incident energy would be possible in indirect approach, but not very easy to use. I've not the formal code to create such a map. But, different of viewshed maps on which each target pixel is calculated relatively to one position (the observer position), each pixel would be calculated several times within one day period in order to integrate the solar course in the sky. The angles will be determined by the sun theoretical position (angle/azimut). At the end of the process, the DN would give the percentage of the sunshine duration per day, or directly the energy received in Watt/m².

I will add this to the todo list.
