3D linear features

Hi Mike,

In order to see lines in 3D, what is the best way to get a xyz vector file for linear features (eg river), from a DEM? (The starting, connecting and ending points of the lines are rarely on a contour line).

Thanks,

TeeGee

    TeeGee,

To get an XYZ file from a 2D vector feature over terrain, just export the data to a vector format that supports a 3D export, like Simple ASCII Text, Shapefile, or DXF, and select the option to include elevation values. Then the elevation values should be filled in from the terrain elevation at each vertex.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Mike,

Seeing 'if available', I thought I had first to convert the vertices into points, then update their elevation before checking the box 'include elevation for each point'.
I was looking for difficulties where there where none, but I'm so used to other software for which the solutions to simple problems are quite always complicated that it's hard to realize that there may be as intelligent software, rich and user friendly as GM.

    Thanks,
