Global Mapper is the ultimate "mash-up" tool. In just a few minutes I was able to take a Tsunami propagation time map (actually only a picture of a map) for the recent Chilean earthquake right off of a news article, and view it in my own preferred "looking at the globe from space" perspective.

I didn't even have to enter any coordinates for this one, I used the tip of Kamchatka and the tip of South America on my already loaded global DEM as control points. I do this with local and regional weather charts, and other global phenomenon every day, and basically monitor the Earth, Ocean, Atmosphere, etc almost in real time. This is the most versatile and universal mapping program there is. Over the years I have georeferenced and patched together hundreds of images of maps, and even scans and photocopies of maps from book pages with GM. From Archeology to Earth Science, GM is the best mapping toolkit to have by far.
